22nd – 23rd July
On the 22nd of July youth groups from Poleglass and Hillhall set of for a weekend of adventure toLustyBegIsland. The two groups had been taking part in a cross community project looking at Equality and Diversity over three Saturday sessions. At times the course was demanding and brought up some interesting topics for debate, for example how to tackle the parades issue in Ardoyne. The group was split up into the relevant governing bodies and they had to come up with a solution with Sean the facilitator acting as a member of the press and taking all their comments and releasing them to get a reaction. Needless to say, they were unable to find a solution but they weren’t too disheartened as the current government still can’t find a solution either!!
As with most courses this one finished with a residential, this time it was toLustyBegIslandwhich was a terrific choice and thoroughly enjoyed by all those who attended. The accommodation was top notch as was the food which would not have been out of place in a 5* hotel. The activities were focused around team building and trust. The youths were split into three separate groups and given “war paint” for their faces to denote which team they were in, and they would each in turn move round the three activities 10 man war canoes, archery and off road land-rover driving. It was a competitive first day with the yellow team ending up victorious. The second day was a much more relaxed affair and the youths recharged their batteries by using the excellent facilities on site. Some opted for a dip in the pool while others chose to relax in the sauna but overall everyone who attended had an excellent time and are looking forward to the return visit
